Production of Boleslawiec pottery is multi stage process. It is a very time consuming task. Mastering of item takes about 2 weeks from start to final product. Our pottery is recognizable all over the world thanks to specific traditional decorations. All process start by picking up loads of raw clay from mine. Clay is mixed with other components and water in large mixers. After hours of mixing everything becomes liquid clay.
Next step is pouring liquid clay into various gypsum molds. Clay stays in for a few minutes and settles on inside walls of a mold. After right thickness is reached we pour rest of clay out. Mold is set for drying.
After clay dried mold is carefully opened and item is removed. Item is cleaned of any extra material by hand and smoothed by wet sponge. After dried it is fired in kiln in 800 Celsius degrees. Now it is called “biskwit”, it is hard and has light pink color.
Biskwit is ready to paint item. Painting pottery requires high skilled artist. Patience and steady hands are much needed. Decorating is done by using paint brushes and stamps. Every single item is crafted individually by hand.
From decorating room items into glazing process. It requires very delicate and careful handling. Whole product is dipped in liquid glaze for few seconds and all paintings disappear under white coating. It is ready for final fire inside 1250 Celsius degrees kiln. Everything become red hot inside. White coating become transparent and hardens, exposing painted patterns.
